Course Description

This course is designed to empower participants with a comprehensive knowledge of housing-related principles and practices. Participants will learn the theory and practical application of knowledge gained in order to advise consumers in housing-related matters. The participant will learn the fundamentals of housing counseling practice as it relates to financial and credit management and the underlying concepts involved in the rental, purchase, mortgage, maintenance, or exchange of real estate.

Completion of this course will result in a certification in comprehensive housing counseling and will also prepare them for the NREI Comprehensive Counseling Examination, and the HUD Housing Counseling Certification examination.

Objective:

• To increase knowledge of the fundamental principles and practices of housing counseling;
• To increase knowledge of privacy/confidentiality, ethics in housing counseling practice, case intake, case development, and documentation and reporting and performance requirements;
• To increase knowledge of the concepts and practical application of housing counseling practice in the areas of credit and budget and financial capability, pre and post purchase, pre and post rental, rental and mortgage delinquency, real estate tax issues, predatory practices, home maintenance and home improvement, and other housing-related matters;
• To prepare the practitioner to apply the knowledge gained in the role context of counselor and/or coach; preparing the practitioner to provide assistance and advice to consumers in housing-related matters;
• To increase knowledge of test-taking mastery skills and concepts to prepare for the HUD Housing Counseling Certification examination.

Part 3 – Pre Purchase Counseling (week 3)
Part 4 – Post Purchase Counseling (week 4)
Part 5 – Foreclosure Intervention (week 5)
Part 6 – Test-taking Strategies and Review of Six Elements (to prepare for the HUD examination) (week 6)
